Feature Film
WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY: John Sayles
STARRING: Joel Torre, Chris Cooper, Garret Dillahunt, Yul Vazquez, Rio Locsin, DJ Qualls
AMIGO, the 17th feature film from writer-director John Sayles, stars Joel Torre as Rafael Dacanay, a village mayor caught in the murderous cross-fire of the Philippine-American War in 1900..When U.S. troops garrison his village, Rafael comes under pressure to collaborate from the blood-and-guts Colonel Hardacre (Chris Cooper) as he tries not to betray his people. But the situation is complex. Rafaelʼs brother Simón (Ronnie Lazaro) is the head of the local Filipino guerillas, and considers any concessions to the Americans to be traitorous. A devious Spanish friar (Yul Vazquez) is charged with translating, but thwarts communication with his spiteful intrigues. A sympathetic American lieutenant (Garret Dillahunt) begins to learn that “hearts and minds” cannot be won at gunpoint. Rafael is forced to make the near-impossible, potentially deadly decisions faced by civilians in an occupied country. Friendship and betrayal, romance and heart-breaking violence, AMIGO is a page torn from the forgotten history of imperialism and a mirror of todayʼs unresolvable conflicts. Mature content.
Q & A to follow with Filipino-American Foundation of New Mexico.

Art View at Hyatt Regency with AFF Artist Adreon Henry
Adreon Henry has been invited to create a series of exclusive paintings for the Albuquerque Film Festival based on 2011 Honoree Dean Stockwell, due to his admiration of the actor’s talent and catalogue of impressive work. Much like the work of Stockwell and Dennis Hopper, Adreon’s own artwork explores the irony of existence; IE: The Daily Sketches. Influenced at an early age by Stockwell’s role in “Blue Velvet,” Adreon realized “that film can be a powerful form of artistic expression.” The theme of Adreon’s work for this years ABQ Film Festival is motivated by inspiring moments from Stockwell’s extensive work in film.

Dance of Liberation (World Premiere)
Feature Film | Spiritual Cinema
Filmmaker Q & A to follow screening.
As a spiritual leader, Parashakti has helped to transform the lives of many. In addition to soul healing and other supportive practices, She has developed and branded a ritualistic movement, with the use of a blindfold, called Dance of Liberation. The use of the blindfold allows the dancers to better tap into their inner vision and, with the assistance of the music, journey to other planes of reality. They tap into their subconscious mind
as well as open the channels to Spirit. Yet, as her work on this path continues, she recognizes the need to re-write her own soul’s contract. Parashakti must learn to integrate key spiritual modalities and the work with others into her own personal journey. This process will take the guidance of wisdom leaders. From Debbie Ford and JohnPerkins, to Alex and Alyson Grey, Emilie Conrad to Dr. Joe Dispenza; these participantsconnect key spiritual modalities to Parashakti’s personal story. The elements include: The Power of Intention, the Breath, the Blindfold, Music, Dance and Returning Home –
ultimately putting these elements into everyday practice.Dance of Liberation places a great emphasis on the importance of lineage and listening
to the Elders. Her work with the Native American elders creates an interesting dynamic,as she was born to Jewish family in Israel. Having developed her career in the US, she now realizes that she must return to Israel to reconnect with her father. He has endured a shamanic journey of his own, which led him into the deserts. At age 40, he found God and became deeply religious, remarried and subsequently raised 7 more children.
The Dance of Liberation becomes more than just a tool. It becomes a metaphor, as people learn let go of their old stories and strive to live with something new. With this practice, a great deal of healing and transformation will take place for dancers seeking their true path in life.

FORDSON: Faith, Fasting, Football
Feature Film | Film 4 Change
Introduced by comedian Davyd Roseman.
'Fordson' is a feature length documentary film that follows four talented high school football players from Dearborn Michigan as they gear up for their big senior year rivalry game during the last ten days of Ramadan, a month when Muslims traditionally fast every day from sunrise to sundown.
The film begins on September 11, 2009 and concludes at the end of Ramadan ten days later. The story is set against the backdrop of the stunningly beautiful Fordson High School, a public high school built by Henry Ford in 1922, which was once all white, but now boasts a 98% Arab population. As our team readies itself to play its affluent, cross town rival, we unearth the adversity faced by a community that is desperately holding onto its Islamic faith while struggling to gain acceptance in post 9-11 America.
'Fordson' documents not only the players' outer struggle to overcome the hunger and thirst of fasting as they prepare for the big game, but also their inner struggle to reconcile their Arab heritage with their American birthright. It is an inspirational story of an immigrant community's resilience, that attempts to answer the question, 'Who is an American?'
Through the eyes of the team, their coaches, and their fans, we get an unprecedented glimpse inside the lives of a community that is home to the largest concentration of Arabs in any city outside of the Middle East, and their determination to hold on to the American Dream.

Game of Death
Feature Film | Film 4 Change
Introduced and moderated by comedian Sarah Kennedy.
This documentary examines the idea of the limits of obedience and punishment. Based on a psychological experiment conducted by Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram in the 1960s, the setting is a modern television game show where we see how far people will go to inflict pain on a contestant with one million Euros in prize money hanging in the balance. Does peer pressure or a desire to obey authority make us do things we would not ordinarily do? And what does it take for someone to simply say no? The answers lie here, and they are highly distressing. France/2010, Christophe Nick, 95 minutes, subtitled, mature content.

With a little luck and heavy on enthusiasm Sammy Hagar created the Cabo Wabo cantina. Little did he realize his idea for a place to play and invite his friends to, would turn into an empire that continues to grow and develop today.
As that idea grew, so did the town. Cabo San Lucas has become a worldwide tourist destination, where many flock not just to hit the beaches, but to party with the guy who started it all.
The biggest party of the year is reserved for Sammy's birthday, where for the past 20 years, he has celebrated October 13th by playing a week of special concerts, to promote and help the town he fell in love with. The publicity, the intimacy of a small club, the special guests who show up unannounced, have captivated the redhead nation from around the world, to journey to the tip of Baja, and celebrate this annual event.
Obscure footage, fan cameras, and archival Sammy performances, not seen in over 30 years, are all incorporated into this rockumentary that even a non-redhead will understand and enjoy.
Mature content.
Tequila Tasting to follow at the Hyatt Regency Downtown ABQ at 5pm.

HELL RIDE with Special Guests MICHAEL MADSEN + Stump
Feature Film
Please join us as we welcome actor MICHAEL MADSEN to the 2011 Albuquerque Film Festival. Mr. Madsen is the recipient of the 2011 AFF Maverick Award and will be honored at the Closing Night Award's Ceremony.
Mr. Madsen will also be presenting MIDNIGHT MOVIES with MICHAEL MADSEN at The KiMo Theatre during the festival:
Don't miss his exciting presentation of HELL RIDE in which he co-starred with AFF Alum, the late Dennis Hopper and Quentin Tarantino's cult classic RESERVOIR DOGS, Executive Produced by AFF Alum Monte Hellman. Joining Mr. Madsen is writer, director and actor Larry Bishop.
HELL RIDE is a raucous throwback to the days of the Sergio Leone spaghetti western, with a heaping helping of testosterone-fueled chopper action thrown into the mix. Writer/director Larry Bishop takes on a third role as Pistolero, head honcho of the Victors, a group of badass bikers who are out to avenge the murder of one of their members at the hands of the 666ers, a rival gang whose actions live up to their hellish moniker. Along with his cohorts, The Gent (deviously portrayed by Michael Madsen) and the mysterious Comanche (Eric Balfour), Pistolero aims to take down The Deuce and Billy Wings, menacing leaders of the 666ers, but a mutiny looms on the horizon when his commitment to profit is questioned by a few of his fellow Victors. An even larger story unravels when previously unknown information about Comanche resurrects ghosts from Pistolero’s past.
Although there is enough sex, violence, and all-out machismo to keep grind-house fans firmly plastered to their seats, Bishop’s take on the genre strays far from exploitation as he weaves a twisting, multi-layered tale of revenge, loyalty, and brotherhood that is brought to life by a superb ensemble cast, with memorable performances by Dennis Hopper, Vinnie Jones, and David Carradine. In the words of Comanche, “The road to hell is paved with anything but good intentions.”
Mature content.
Also showing the short film STUMP: A gruesome grindhouse short about the hatred between a man & his leg.

Director Mark Wexler (in attendance) embarks on a worldwide trek to investigate just what it means to grow old and what it could mean to really live forever. But whose advice should he take? Does 94-year-old exercise guru Jack LaLanne have all the answers, or does Buster, a 101-year-old chain-smoking, beer-drinking marathoner? What about futurist Ray Kurzweil, a laughter yoga expert, or an elder porn star?
Q & A following the film.

I Want Your Money
Feature Film
Filmmaker Ray Griggs in attendance.
Two versions of the American dream now stand in sharp contrast. One views the money you earned as yours and best allocated by you. It champions the traditional American dream, which has played out millions of times through generations of Americans, of improving one’s lot in life and the entrepreneurial spirit of daring to dream and to build big. The other believes that the federal government, using taxpayers’ money, should play a major role in leveling out the nation’s wealth to guarantee outcomes to all, regardless of effort. How America chooses between these two views of the role of government, at this crucial juncture, will have everything to do with the future we and our children and our children’s children will enjoy.
President Barack Obama clearly believes in the larger government view. In his Inaugural Address, he said, “Now there are some who question the scale of our ambitions – who suggest our system cannot tolerate big plans…The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works—whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.” With a federal deficit of nearly one and a half trillion dollars for 2009 and deficit projections of not less than a half a trillion dollars over the next ten years, the question of whether government is too big or too small is very relevant, even vital to the future of the nation.
Join filmmaker Ray Griggs in this documentary film I Want Your Money as he contrasts the two paths the United States can take using the words and actions of Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan. The film uses interviews from well-known public figures, experts, movie clips, dramatic portrayals, music, graphics and even comedic animation to tell the story in the plainest terms of the choice between the Obama and the Reagan views of the role of the federal government in our society. It also examines how these big government programs have been tried in the past at great moral and financial cost to the nation. California is offered as a case-in-point in understanding what economic challenges might face the nation, if we choose the larger government path. Finally, I Want Your Money is a call to action for those who care about the future of the United States.

La Hora Cero w/ Delia & Centigrade
Feature Film | Short
Q & A with actor Steve Wilcox of La Hora Cero and Colin Cunningham (Falling Skies) of Centigrade to follow the film.
Introduced and moderated by comedian John Cuellar.
La Hora Cero is a gritty, fast-paced heist film. Set in Caracas during the 24 hours of a controversial medical strike, it follows Parca, a tattooed hit-man, as he takes an elite hospital hostage in order to save his girlfriend. What seemed like a perfect plan will end in a frenetic outcome, as Parca is forced to come to terms with his past, and as he discovers that his worst enemies are much closer than he ever imagined. A love story told in the midst of chaos, La Hora Cero is a timely and universal story about the mythic rise to power and the inevitable fall from grace.
Mature content.
CENTIGRADE ENTIGRADE is a contemporary thriller about a Man (Colin Cunningham – FLASHPOINT, Da VINCI’S INQUEST) who lives in an old, busted up camper trailer… But wakes up one morning to find himself (and it) rolling down the highway. Towed by a mysterious black pick-up truck, the Man is taken hostage aboard this rolling nightmare and will have to use his wits in order to survive.
CENTIGRADE is an intense, no holds barred thrill ride into one mans living hell. Intelligent and uncompromising, this film was SHORT LISTED for a 2009 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATION, HAS TAKEN NUMEROUS BEST PICTURE AWARDS and was created by multi-award winning filmmakers, Colin Cunningham and Madison Graie.

Philip Pearlstein: Naked Vision
Documentary
Ironic, imperturbable, mischievous and fascinating, Philip Pearlstein's controversial creative vision continues to drive him forward, upstream against time and art history. For over sixty years Pearlstein has held fast to the same painting subject: the naked model in the artist’s studio.
The only changes have been the inclusion of objects from his personal collection of objects and folk art amidst the models. Philip Pearlstein: Naked Vision looks at the forces and circumstances that created an artist of such singular vision. His extreme ‘focus’ allowed him to ignore rejection from critics, peers, museum boards and even his first dealer to become the collected and respected artist he is today. Philip, now almost 87 remains true to his vision, naked or not.
Appearances by: Richard Armstrong, Chuck Close, Robert Pincus-Witten, Robert Storr and others.
Contains nudity.
Q & A to follow with Mr. Pearlstein, filmmakers and art critic Dave Hickey. Moderated by Andrew Connors.
Reception to follow at Creative Albuquerque with Mr. Pearlstein.

Short

Two Shorts:
The Absence
THE INCREDIBLE VOYAGE OF CAPTAIN HOOK: Filmmaker Josh Klein in attendance.
What if everything you thought you knew was nothing more than a work of fiction?
That’s the question raised in The Incredible Voyage of Captain Hook. From start to finish the film takes you on the journey of one man struggling with his reality.
Captain James Hook is reintroduced to the world as a madman, thrown into a mental institution after being discovered wandering through traffic. Hook, now a hopeless shell of the warrior he once was, bargains with a young psychiatrist for his freedom. Why? A maniacal, bloodthirsty nemesis is sure to find him, and once he does, no one will be spared. Disregarded as the desperate rantings of a lunatic, Hook is admitted into the institution to be transformed from the fictional character whom he was convinced he was, into a man without a past, or so he’s led to believe…
The Incredible Voyage of Captain Hook transforms a legendary, villainous character, into a sympathetic protagonist with whom you’ll feel a powerful connection. The filmmakers combine animation, prosthetics, visual effects, and daring stuntwork in order to fully immerse you in this journey alongside Captain Hook.

America is addicted to oil. President George Bush said so… and now that phrase is echoed everywhere. But are we really “addicted”?
Our daily lives are dripping in oil. It’s in virtually everything we use and fuels everything we do. To be sure, it is something to worry about. Are we going to run out? Aren’t we fighting wars for oil? But, if we do slow the flow, how will that change the way we live?
When it comes to what we’re told about oil, there’s rhetoric and then there’s reality. Who can we believe? The media? Politicians? Environmental activists? You’d be surprised.
For nearly ten years, journalist turned media analyst MARK MATHIS has studied our use of oil. And what he found shocked him so thoroughly that he made a movie about the misinformation, distortions and even outright lies about oil.
We do have an “oil problem” in America (and the world), but it’s not what you’ve been told. So, it’s time to Fill Up on Truth… for a change.
Filmmaker in attendance.

Talking With Spirits
Documentary | Feature Film | Spiritual Cinema
Filmmaker Michael Wiese in attendance for Q & A.
In 1970 the young filmmaker Michael Wiese arrived in Bali and was taken to a remote village by a Balinese painting salesman. He became the first Westerner to live with the Balinese in this village participating in temple ceremonies, playing gamelan, painting, and seeing shadow plays. The longer he stayed, the more he realized that he was not really ‘seeing’ the world where the Balinese lived. In that world, the Balinese spend half their life participating in elaborate rituals and ceremonies evoking the spirits of the ancestors and honoring countless spirits deities – both gods and demons – who influence our world.
Michael wanted to learn more about these dimensions awash with spirits and powerful entities so common in Bali but unheard of in the Western world, but after 40 years and many visits, little progress was made. Then, a breakthrough occurred. Bali yielded its secrets as trance dancers, mediums, shadow masters, priests and healers revealed the spiritual practices and portals to these sacred dimensions.
The result – a filmic treasure with many never-before-seen moments that makes us question everything we know about the nature of reality, consciousness and the source of creativity and inspiration.

He enlists the help of his endearing, albeit dim-witted friend Amer (Matt Peterson), and the two devise a Bigfoot hoax to garner attention and votes from the townspeople. Things quickly spiral out of control as the con begins to take on a life of its own and becomes bigger than either of them imagined. The Forgotten Bomb
Feature Film | Film 4 Change
Filmmaker Stuart Overbey Q & A with reception to follow at Half-life Digital.
When the Cold War ended, worry about nuclear weapons also receded. But has the nuclear threat really receded as well? If the U.S. and Russia are no longer in an arms race, why are there nuclear weapons in both countries that are still on high alert?
Filmmaker Bud Ryan sets out to discover what possible explanations there could be as to why the posture of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) still exists, and how the nuclear powers might free the world from this threat once and for all.
The Forgotten Bomb examines the political and legal implications of nuclear weapons, but also digs deeper, into the cultural and psychological reasons behind the arsenal's existence. Bud Ryan's quest takes us from the homes of hibakusha (A-bomb survivors) in Japan, to an abandoned Uranium mine in New Mexico, to an underground Titan missile silo in Arizona. From these places, and many others, Ryan puts together the pieces of a puzzle that explain why we have the bomb, and how we might finally do away with it.
Through interviews with atomic scientists, politicians, authors, statesmen, and atomic bomb survivors, The Forgotten Bomb examines what The Bomb means to us all, and why we need to think about it again, now, even though the Cold War is long over.

The Highest Pass
Documentary | Feature Film | Spiritual Cinema
Filmmaker in attendance.
Soon after Adam Schomer meets a modern yogi and guru, Anand Mehrotra, they plan an expedition through the highest passes of the Himalayas in Northern India. These are some of the most dangerous roads in the world, yet they manage to assemble a team of seven motorcycle riders to share in what will become the journey of a lifetime.
These riders and Adam, who learned to ride two weeks before the trip, are guided by the inspiring teachings of Anand who bears the burden of a Vedic prophecy that predicts he will die in his late twenties in an accident. He is that age now, yet leads with a fearlessness and wisdom that reminds us that “Only the one who dies, truly lives.”
But wisdom in words and wisdom in practice can be very different indeed, especially when riding along the sheer icy edges of Himalayan cliffs. The bikers ride on that edge, navigating dirt, gravel, snow, ice and the onslaught of loaded trucks, known as “road killers”, as they journey for 21 days towards the highest motorable road on earth. It is a pass open only three months a year and at a height 18,000ft, is on par with Everest base camp. Low oxygen, altitude sickness, river flooded roads, and a constrictive fear all live along this one lane road.
Yet they choose this path to seek Ladakh, the land known as the Little Tibet. Why this path? Because it’s a road that leads to incredibly isolated mountain lakes, ancient monasteries, inside the knowing eyes of a mystic oracle, and ultimately deeper into themselves...
It's amazing that their guide himself is battling a prophecy and yet is determined to ride one of the hardest roads in the world. It is both haunting and inspiring. It brings up our worst fears and our deepest courage. Adam must ask if the possibility of a spiritual breakthrough worth the risk of serious injury or death? Will it help us all understand what it means to live our lives?
This adventure cracks the foundations we think we stand on. And in this case, the foundation is a one lane road winding through the Himalayas. The Highest Pass.

Warren Oates Short Film w/ Book Signing & Discussion with Susan Compo
Short
Susan Compo, author of "Warren Oates: A Wild Life" appears as Katy Haber, the long-time assistant of director Sam Peckinpah, in "Nobody Loses All the Time", a short film partially inspired by her book.
"Nobody Loses All the Time", directed by Greg Travis (Watchmen, Halloween 2), explores the production of Peckinpah's cult classic film "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia", starring Warren Oates and Isela Vega. Drawing from biographies of Peckinpah and Oates, Travis recaptures the struggles the director and his crew faced when the head of United Artists threatens to nix the movie. "Nobody Loses All the Time" is true to Peckinpah's masterpiece, with seventies period costumes, authentic sets, and look-alike actors. Even the short's title comes from Oates's lines in "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia."
Warren Oates: A Wild Life
by Susan A. Compo
Though he never quite reached the lead actor status he worked so relentlessly to achieve, Warren Oates (1928-1982) is known today as one of the most memorable and skilled character actors of the 1960s and 1970s. With his rugged looks and measured demeanor, Oates crafted complex characters that were at once brazen and thoughtful, wild and subdued. Warren Oates: A Wild Life is the first book-length look at the actor whom friends remember as a hard-living, hard-drinking man who was kind and caring, but also as mean as a blue-eyed devil.
"A finely drawn and deeply researched portrait of Warren Oates, set against the rich cultural and social landscape of a long-gone American and filled with a fascinating supporting cast that includes Robert Culp, Monte Hellman, Ed "Kookie" Byrnes, and Sam Peckinpah. In writing this book, Susan Compo has done for the actor what he did for so many of life's misunderstood characters--give him depth, dignity, and importance. To paraphrase a line from Ride the High Country, one of the actor's first films, Compo can enter her house justified."--Deanne Stillman, author of Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West -- Deanne Stillman
Best Movie Book of 2010 by Phillip French of the Observer (UK)

White Knight w/ Lobster and The Heist
Comedy | Feature Film | Short
Introduced and moderated by comedian Black Mike.
Filmmaker Jesse Baget and Actors Hector Jimenez, Kevin Farley and Olga Segura in attendance for White Knight.
Filmmaker Gary Sugarman in attendance for The Heist.
Leroy Lowe (Tom Sizemore), grand dragon of the Texas Ku Klux Klan confronts everything he’s been taught to hate when he’s sentenced to three years of hard labor on a prison work farm, where Warden Merville (Stacy Keach), dead set on rehabilitating Leroy, chooses Emilio (Hector Jimenez), a Hispanic field worker imprisoned for fighting for labor rights, to be his cellmate.
Leroy, confined in a small cell with the "enemy," far from the KKK comrades who deserted him, finds the chatty Emilio slowly chipping away at his anger and prejudice.
His weekly rehabilitation meetings with the warden, barely tolerable as the man drones on about farm labor and field crops, take on a different meaning when Madalena (Olga Segura), a beautiful Mexican maid is hired to clean the warden's office. An unconventional love story develops that opens Leroy’s eyes to the possibility of a different life. And a man who was a born and bred racist finds himself heading down a path to redemption. Mature content.

THE HEIST: Three yahoos are out to rob a bank, but these three guys haven’t got a clue about proper robbing etiquette.
