Thurs. 26, Aug: 10:30pm – 12:00am @ Casa Escencia – Hotel Albuquerque

Chanteuse Julie Christensen has honed her chameleon craft. In hundreds of shows she has sung Joan of Arc to Leonard Cohen’s flame. She’s also sung with Steve Wynn, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, and currently with Van Dyke Parks. With Chris D., she headed up post-punk rockers Divine Horsemen. Others utilizing Julie’s kaleidoscope talents have been as far-flung as Iggy Pop, PiL, Robben Ford, and k.d. lang.

Her acclaimed independent albums are a soulful hybrid of jazz and folk. The two latest offerings are “Where the Fireworks Are”– the poetry of emotion and politics stirred up together, and “Something Familiar”, a collection of standards, ballads, and blues. Contributors include Greg Leisz and Headless Household. Julie, as well as drummer Kenny Wollesen and bassist Don Falzone, were also part of Came So Far for Beauty, the concert series featured in the Lion’s Gate feature “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man”.“

Julie appeared in Allison Anders’ Border Radio, Barry Levinson’s Bugsy, and onstage at the Public and Florida Shakespeare in Sam Shepard’s The Sad Lament of Pecos Bill on the Eve of Killing His Wife, and Simpatico.

“–one of the truer singers you’ll ever hear — straight up, no mannerisms, perfect taste; listen to… her piercing new Something Familiar, and recognize how she could sing with both Leonard Cohen and Chris D. “–Greg Burk L.A. WEEKLY

“Simply put, this gal’s voice can raise every single hair on my body—
and all at the same time! Be it R&B, pop, rock, she can sing it all, and
with style, too.” — LA Weekly

“From the heart-wrenching title track, which serves up an aching dose of harsh reality, to the cascading piano that drives the plaintive “Something Pretty,” Where the Fireworks Are is a collection of songs spanning the emotional spectrum. It provides an evocative musical chariot for Christensen to weave her vocal magic.” (Brett Leigh-Dicks) VC REPORTER

Bass Reeves is a noted Poet and Philosopher who has turned his attention to his greatest passion …..writing, recording and performing his extensive catalogue of songs. His current band has participated in the creation of over 30 gold and platinum albums and has created a sound worthy of comparison to some of the greats of the genre.

Over the past decade he has impressed audiences with his mesmerizing presentations by himself or with his band everywhere from the street corner to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts…….The album “If You Ignore the Truth” has steadily gained a worldwide recognition as one of the great lyrically driven storytelling style recordings in a generation….Listeners who enjoy Bass also enjoy the works of Tom Petty, John Lennon, The Band, Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Young, REM, Johnny Cash,Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, The Doors, The Kinks and even Metallica…..Musically the influences are everything from Folk to Funk to R&B and the Blues to Rock ,Country and Americana… “Bass” is a voting member of NARAS(The Grammys), The Americana Music Association and a member of the Song Writers Hall of Fame. His performing rights organization is ASCAP. He is also represented by SoundExchange….

Here’s what some are saying:

“When I listen to Bass play and hear what He is saying, my heart is taken on a journey. To me he has proven a powerful thing….that to be determined in your dream you can achieve anything. He set out to make this Album and I feel that this is just the beginning. His potential is limitless and like a wildflower in the wind his music will forever spread and grow.”
Natasha Lili Klauss……..Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

“I work with the best Bands and Muscians in the world every day in my professional life. Bass and His Band belong with them all. But Bass as a writer belongs in that sparse catagory occupied by very few….Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Ani Difranco…..make room!”

“All in the Musical Family”…For the past few years, Lost & Found frontwoman Aimee Lay has been moonlighting as the bass player for Al Lay, who happens to be her older brother. Now ex-Sonny Bones member Al (who worked as an engineer at A&M records / sat in on bass with Black Sabbath) will be the second guitarist for the Lost & Found live. The Manhattan Beach natives share a gift for some of the smartest indie pop tunes on the L.A. scene. Al has won acclaim for such songs as “Perfect World”, from his debut album, “Life” as songwriter of the year at the DIY Music Festival. Baby sis shows off wicked chops on the indie-pop gems “I Wanna Believe” and “Flashes”. The Lost & Found play the Troubadour on Dec. 14; Al’s next performance is Dec. 17 at the Viper Room.”

-Steve Baltin and Kevin Bronson (LOS ANGELES TIMES)

“Al Lay’s music is aggressive yet accessible, animated by a strong performance aesthetic. It’s clear that Al’s influences reach into the past, but he has a style very much his own. Al has a cool, tuneful, muscular baritone that slips deftly in and out of vibrato, reminiscent of Nick Cave and David Bowie. The two tracks I heard make the case that Lay has both a lot of soul and a knack for prickly hooks…”

-Robert Doerschuk (STARPOLISH.COM)

“Mixing a blend of melodic pop with deep, meaningful lyrics and an engaging voice, Al Lay has found a formula that is able to both captivate listeners and give them something to grown on and think about in the process…something that the world sorely needs right now. Al Lay also plays all of the instruments on the album and then puts on yet another hat jumping behind the board to do all of the recording and producing. Al Lay is not the next fad…he may very well set the new standard in contemporary pop music. He has a proven track record (which in itself is quite impressive), a considerable fan base, oh and by the way…his tracks have hit-potential as well. Al Lay is the total package. Bottom line…”

-UNDAGROUND PRODUCTIONS

“Al Lay is a multi-talented artist who has been writing and playing music for several years. Although he would consider bass his main instrument, he plays all of the instruments on the album. Working as a recording engineer at A&M records and working his day job as a voiceover director/engineer has enabled him to craft a very well-recorded pop-funk gem that reveals influences such as David Bowie, Richie Havens, the Beatles and Sly Stone. But Al isn’t just a studio cat who can’t cut it live. As a member of various bands, he’s rocked the Hollywood club circuit regularly, playing places like the Troubadour, Spaceland, the Whisky A Go Go, the Key Club, Viper Room and the House of Blues. His last band, Sonny Bones, even landed him on a tour around the United States.”

-LIP SERVICE MAGAZINE

“Greatness” is one of many explosive tracks artfully delivered by Sonny Bones on their self-titled album; with Al Lay’s bass work standing out through and through. The five colorful characters of this Los Angeles based band describe their music as “Hollywood hip-hop hype-rock”. Their music has also appeared on two compilation discs, Local Access: LA’s Best Unsigned and Mike Galaxy’s Indie Hits.” * “Greatness” was later used in the film’ Step Into Liquid’

-Daryl Searle (MEAN STREET)

“With the help of his sister, Aimee Lay, Al Lay has executed a perfect feel good pop album, Change, full of contemplation and hope. Al has a knack for writing and composing catchy songs that captivate the listener’s subconscious; the type that touch your emotions and get stuck in your head all day. In layman’s terms, he can put words and music together that are extremely listenable, as if made for the radio. However, his music is not to be confused with hollow, plastic pop. Al has perfected his craft at no cost to the soul of the music or the message.”

-Dirty Jeff (DIRTY HIPPIE RADIO)

Thurs. 26, Aug. 10:30pm – 12:00am @ Casa Escencia – Hotel Albuquerque

Wagogo, born, raised and loved in Albuquerque, NM, is an ecclectic group of musicians that make a rhythmic cocktail out of their Chicano influences, Northern Mexico folk songs, warm calypso island grooves, and the captivating spirit music of Zimbabwe. Their lyrics possess an equally enriching quality, being composed mostly by lead singer Armando Ortega, in a blend of Spanish, English, and the Shona language of Zimbabwe. With such a diverse repertoire, Wagogo inspires a multigenerational crowd to dance and sing, and even gets the old folks weeping with its dedication to preserving the traditional roots of music, in addition to exploring new sounds. Broadcast on radio stations from New Mexico to New York, California, and Zimbabwe, they have been reinvited to the Zimbabwe Music Festival for three years, and will be appearing in many other world music festivals to come. With all the intrigue of the Land of Enchantment, they are definitely a band not to be missed.

Wagogo is one of the longest-standing, most evolved local New Mexico bands of the past decade or so, having released 5 CD’s (in three lanuages) “Waking Up” in 1999, “Baile Sosegador” in 2000, “Familia y Amor” in 2001, self-titled “Wagogo” (2003) and has most currently released “Love Music” (2007) on which their previous flirtations with African rhythms and indigenous melodies have coalesced into a stunning example of what a group of musicians can accomplish when their collective influences are simply allowed to flow freely.

Currently consisting of Armando Ortega (vocals, guitar, mbira, banjo, seperewa, percussion); longtime musical partner Teles Sanchez (guitar, vocals) and Alyson Steinman (bass, vocals), plus many friends. Wagogo utilizes a host of guest musicians live and on their recordings which lends the band a unique familial quality that’s instantly gratifying.
